Diabetes

  • Diabetes is a medical condition
  • It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin
  • Insulin is a hormone that helps use food for energy
  • Diabetics have more sugar and fat in their blood than normal
  • Too much sugar and fat in the blood can damage the blood vessels
  • This damage to the blood vessels puts you at risk for stroke
  • The cause of diabetes is not known

There are two types of diabetes

  • Type 1 Diabetes is when the body stops making its own insulin
  • Type 1 Diabetes needs to be treated with insulin
  • Type 2 Diabetes happens when the body stops the insulin from working
  • Type 2 Diabetes may be treated with diet, tablets, and losing weight
